Complications

Towards the end of the pregnancy, my OBGYN started having me see a high risk maternal fetal specialist. I had more sonos of that baby (we opted not to find out if it was a boy or girl) than most people. Many of my pregnant friends were anxious for the pregnancy to be over. I wanted that baby to stay in as long as it could to be healthy. By that point I was having the normal heart burn/ difficulty eating/painful joints, but I didn't care! It was nothing compared to how sick I was in the beginning.

Then one day, while we were having a sono, the tech seemed a little worried. When the doctor came in, he explained that the baby seemed small and we might have to induce early. He instructed me to get as much protein as possible and seem them again in a few days. I was terrified all over again.

A few days later they checked the baby and there was some growth, but not a ton. We were instructed to start coming in every week for them to check the baby. This was before the 36 week mark, so we were just trying to keep that baby in as long as safely possible at that point. A week passed and we kept waiting. Then, in the 37th week, I started having low amniotic fluid. They said to come back in a few days and drink a lot of water. My OB put me on bed rest for 2 weeks. The fluid went back up a bit and they said come back again in a few days. The fluid had gone down again but not as much. And so a few days later, we came back again, ready to head off to work after the sono (it was the end of the two weeks), only to find out that the fluid was down and there was calcification on the placenta.

The doctor announced I'm calling your OB, we are sending you to the hospital now.

I had made it into the 38th week, which is technically full term. I was nervous and excited.  We went to labor and delivery and were sent back to triage.
